Quartet bet could be the Series winner

- Jack Milner

It is no secret that I am a great fan of the Quartet because in many cases the payouts are almost those of a Pick 6 but unlike that bet, you only have to wait one race to collect your winnings.

A carryover Quartet pool is always wonderful to bet into and tomorrow at Turffontein we have two – Races 7 and 8, the two legs of the WSB Grand Series.

I always advocate double floating two horses with the field and in Race 8 the two horses pick themselves – Zouaves and Mardi Gras. They are both proven over the course and as they have over 1450m the extra 25m will make no difference.

After the two of them, anything could come in and you could get a massive upset in third and fourth places. It is also possible that something could just have that extra luck in running and pip[ both the top two and then you have a great Quartet payout. So stick to the rule and take the whole field.

Race 7 is a lot more complicated because there are no two obvious horses to float. If you can find two who you really like, then go for it as this Quartet has the potential to pay really big money. Favourite is Divine Odyssey at 9-2 with Soldier On at 5-1. They both have chances but both appear to prefer a little further and would be better if this race was 1600m and up.

My personal fancy is for Lake Kinneret who is quoted at 20-1 and upwards with most bookmakers. He is in good form, as is St John Gray’s stable, is well drawn at No 4, carries just 52.5kg and has a superb jockey up in Richard Fourie who knows how to use that light weight.

Sean Tarry’s yard is coming to form and that brings Purple Diamond into contention while Sail For Joy and Rings And Things are in form and well drawn.

There are badly drawn runners who could place, bringing in Kings Archer, Hakeem and Chepardo.

Nine horses boxed for 10% costs R302.40 but if you can find two horses to float, the field with those two will cost you R158.40 for 10%.
