Chiefs rocked in Zanzibar

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

After yesterday’s shock 2-1 defeat to lowly Zimamoto in Zanzibar, Kaizer Chiefs are unlikely to get a warm welcome from their fans despite winning 5-2 on aggregate to reach the next round of the Caf Confederations Cup.

Amakhosi flattered to deceive as they beat Zimamoto 4-0 at home only to lose at Amaan Stadium in Ungaja, Zanzibar yesterday afternoon.

What should be a major concern in the Chiefs camp though is the way they lost both to Arrows and Zimamoto as all four goals against them in the two games came from the penalty spot.

Giovanni Solinas’ side conceded a penalty two minutes from the end of the first half and Yussuf Mtuba – who had shown glimpses of excellence in the first leg – converted from the spot to make it 1-0.

But the Glamour Boys upped their game in the second half and were rewarded in the 50th minute when Bernard Parker sent Lebogang Manyama through on goal and the latter made no mistake.

Solinas’ side thought they had taken the lead a few minutes later when Parker set up Ryan Moon who tapped in from close range but referee Dawit Asamenew decided against giving it after consulting his assistants, giving Zimamoto a place kick instead.

Mtuba then scored his second, converting from the penalty spot once again in the 73rd minute to hand Zimamoto what is probably their most famous win.
