I doff my hat to Baroka FC coach Nyirenda

-

Iknow this might hurt some people but the good story I told about Baroka last week was completed into a fairy tale when they went on and beat Orlando Pirates to be crowned champions for the very first time.

I just hope the win has made them want more because the more teams we have fighting for cups, the better our football will become.

And their story should serve as an inspiration to the other so called small teams, especially those who change coaches at the drop of a hat. Bakgaga almost made the same mistake as rumours that they would be firing their coach Wedson Nyirenda gained traction just before he beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter finals.

But he has proven himself and I believe if given a proper chance and is allowed to work independently without interference, he is yet to achieve more. He has only been in South Africa for less than six months but he has already won a trophy, something some who have been here donkeys’ years are yet to do. It is an unfortunate fact that coaches are judged based on results and trophies they win for the club.

Imagine a hunter who is glorified as being one of the best in the industry but he never brings home the kill. That is how we should look at a coach who is good but doesn’t win anything. @SbongsKaDonga

But angikho lapho, I have another good story to tell yet again this week. It seems I have been a good boy all year and Santa has blessed me with good stories at this time.

This week I celebrate Amajita – our national Under-20 team – who were once again crowned Cosafa Under-20 Cup champions on Thursday. The way these boys play makes one hopeful that the future will be bright. Their success comes hot on the heels of Banyana Bayana’s. Bantwana also played at the World Cup this year. And with Bafana still in with a chance to qualify for next year’s host-less African Cup of Nations, it looks like it has been a good year for us. Forget that we didn’t play at the senior men’s World Cup in Russia, but we had a fairly good year. Oh, I almost forgot, Bafana and Banyana beat Nigeria too.

Amajita’s success however comes with a bit of bad news because I still can’t figure out why these youngsters fail to graduate to the senior team. I was hopeful that things would get better and some of them would make the senior team when Thabo Senong was an assistant to Stuart Baxter but he has since been released.

With Senong at Bafana I hoped it would help in the way that there would be synergy between the two teams and the youngsters would then easily understand and fit into Baxter’s philosophy. But it is not only Baxter who is not giving the Amajita players a chance. Even at club level most of them are not making any headway.

It must be frustrating and confusing for them because they do well at Amajita but hardly get a look-in at their clubs.

But Lyle Foster gives me hope that he will soon be scoring goals for Bafana because I am sure, with his consistency at Amajita, he cannot be ignored forever.
