Steve hopes to build on win

- Jonty Mark

Steve Komphela’s Golden Arrows will hope to keep up a winning start to the season tomorrow when they face Bloemfontein Celtic in the Absa Premiership at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium.

Arrows began the 2019/20 campaign with a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in a KZN derby, and the Arrows coach was particularly happy with the performance, given the changes made.

“The result was a great start to the season. We had five debutantes in our team, who performed well on the day. We played well in the beginning of the match and defended sensibly,” said Komphela (above).

Those five included former Witbank Spurs goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda and ex-Richards Bay midfielder Michael Gumede, who netted the winner.

Komphela, of course, left Celtic to join Arrows last December, with the side in serious financial trouble. Phunya Sele Sele’s status remains perilous, but they will hope for a lift at home tomorrow after going down 3-1 at Orlando Pirates last weekend.

It remains to be seen if 22-yearold Sipho Chaine continues in goal for Celtic, or if coach Lehlohonolo Seema decides to give Jackson Mabokgwane a chance. The former MP Black Aces keeper joined Celtic after leaving Pirates at the end of last season.

Komphela, meanwhile, could think of starting Zimbabwean striker Knox Mutizwa against Celtic – Mutizwa scored three times against tomorrow’s opponents last season in Bloemfontein, twice in a 2-1 win in the Nedbank Cup at the end of March, and once in the league encounter in January, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
