Greg Marinovich is synonymous in South Africa with photojournalism.
He’s well-known for his coverage of the end of apartheid and the run-up to our first democratic elections in 1994.
Marinovich’s pictures have been used widely across the front pages of South African newspapers and others around the world – winning him a Pulitzer Prize and various other accolades.
It is difficult to describe to outsiders what it is like to work as a press photographer.
People will never understand the chaos of being in some of the situations we find ourselves in, some of the surreal conversations we have with subjects, or the extreme emotional highs and lows we experience on a daily basis.
This book is a collection of some of Marinovich’s experiences during his 25 years of covering conflict around the world.
He recalls encounters with rebels, child soldiers, illegal immigrants, peacekeepers, aid workers and orphans.
Marinovich has always been known as a photographer who operates with passion, as well as care for all his subjects – and this book reveals the human side of many of these conflicts.
Each chapter touches on a different subject – and the people that Marinovich encounters are extraordinary.
Some of the tales are humorous, some are heartbreaking. But, overall, it’s a frank and intimate glimpse of what it’s like to be at the forefront of bringing the news to readers and viewers across the world.
