Crome Yellow to turn to Fairview Algoa Cup gold

- Bonginkosi Nkosi

Sunday’s Listed Algoa Cup will conclude what promises to be an action-packed weekend – filled with features – and to match the quality of the fields, TAB have announced a R500 000 Pick 6 MEGAPOOL that is expected to reach R3 million.

This 2000m contest has attracted some big-name trainers from Cape Town and it could pay to side with Andre Nel-trained Crome Yellow, a six-time winner who seldom runs a poor race and has beaten a lot of these market leaders.

This Trippi gelding is the model of consistency and was on an impressive two-run winning streak prior to finished third in the Listed Settlers Trophy producing a late assault on Belgarion to lose by a diminishing length.

He is unbeaten at this Fairview Turf track and has shown a tremendous liking for 2000m having recorded a victory and two close-up thirds from three starts.

Crome Yellow beat his main danger and 7-2 favourite, Knights Templar, by 1.90 lengths in his penultimate start and although at 57kg he shoulders 1.5kg more, this gelding’s case is strengthened by his rival returning from a 64-day layoff and jumps from a No 10 draw in this 17-horse field.

The selection is beautifully drawn at gate No 3.

Although Knight Templar ran appallingly in his only attempt over 2000m, staying is not an issue.

He beat Crome Yellow over 1800m onerun back and on that result is a must-include in your Pick 6.

Have a Cane Lime 'N Soda today at Fairview, suggests Brendan Gaillard.

The Listed Racing Association Stakes over 1600m heads the meeting and should be a competitive finish with a lot of improving three-year-olds competing.

Trainer Vaughan Marshall is good at picking his races for his runners and Cane Lime ‘N Soda could be the right one.

This Gimmethegreenlight colt has got better with each run this season and should be well-suited to this course and distance, having won twice over the distance in the Western Cape.

Cane Lime 'N Soda was a maiden winner in August, a little disappointing when a runner-up behind Jay Rock in his next start but a lot better when beating Cat Daddy.

He will get better over even further but is fit and well and ready to strike again.

Trainers Glen Kotzen and Justin Snaith are never shy to send out runners for this race and Viva Rio and Stopalltheclocks must be respected.

The locals are represented by some decent sorts in Foreign Source and Hooves Of Troy.

Trainer Alan Greeff has put in his two decent three-year-old fillies, Luna Wish and Brandina, and they are not out of it.

Visiting trainers usually have a good meeting and the Marshall-trained Red Eight looks the right one to take Race 8 with MJ Byleveld in the irons.
