FUN IN THE SUN: STAYING HOME IS SO MUCH FUN

- Adriaan Roets

Square has been transformed into a sandy oasis for kids – and cool festival.

Being stuck in Gauteng this holiday doesn’t mean you can’t feel the sand in your toes while swirling an icy beverage with an umbrella on top. Just aim the headlights of your car to the N14 and visit Silverstar Casino.

Headlining summer activities is the annual Beach Festival, and yes – it’s as fun as it sounds.

For the last four years, the Square has been transformed into a sandy oasis where kids can build sandcastles and parents can wind down. But for a real treat for under 18s tomorrow, the beach will host its Impulse U18 Festival.

Possibly the biggest and most unique under 18 event to hit Johannesburg, some of SA’s best DJs are set to liven up the space for a fun and unique outside music experience. Biggy, Kyle Cassim, George Sax Ibiza Resident, Hapoly, Master Simz, Trademarc, Chunda Munki and Marc Stent are already on the list of performers. There’s also a under 18 festival planned for January 10 in the new year.

Smash Hit Radio

Not a beach person? Maybe the latest show at Barnyard Theatre Silverstar will put you in the festive mood. Smash Hit Radio is a radio station for all listeners, featuring a 10 piece cast of musicians and singers.

Covering 60 years of hit songs, it’s a night out to rememer. From Louis Armstrong to Ed Sheeran, from Elton John to Lynyrd Skynyrd, UB40 to Bob Segar.

The show also pays tribute to one of the greatest ’80s rock band, Toto, with songs like Hold the Line, Rosanna and Africa, as well as tributes to Earth, Wind and Fire, Donna Summer, The Four Tops, Etta James and Glenn Miller.

Let’s not forget about the funky ’90s with songs like Kiss from a Rose by Seal, If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher and Vulindlela by the late great Brenda Fassie.

The catchy eighties are featured with songs by Whitney Houston, Gloria Gaynor, Men at Work and George Michael. The 21st Century also features on Smash Hit Radio with tributes to George Ezra, Lady Gaga, and Bebe Rexha.

The Soil

Just a short walk from the sandy beach, The Soil is returning to Silverstar next year when they bring Shikisha the Tour.

The Soil is living the legacy and unapologetically grounded in Sophiatown

roots. On February 28 an 29 The Soil will launch their single Shikisha at the Silverstar Casino Ballroom venue. Shikisha is a single taken from their fourth album coming soon in 2020.

The Soil will feature musician Morena the Squire known for his famous songs Faith Alive, Nguwe and his recent collaboration with Buhlebendalo titled Umoya.
