Eskom’s proposed increase a joke

-

It is with astonishment and anger that I read about the above-inflation electricity rate increase, and a stealthy way of trying to include a R200 fixed levy for prepaid users.

Prepaid users should be preferred customers as the City of Joburg/City Power has our money up front, there is no way we can default as if we do we don’t have electricity and the city is probably earning interest until we have used the electricity paid for.

How can you have the temerity to propose an increase of up to 75% on electricity costs in this time when, due to the Covid-19 lockdown, has caused numerous citizens to have salaries reduced or be retrenched?

This will have a major impact on the city’s finances for some time to come.

Those of us who have been lucky enough to still have work and salaries are faced with rising costs across the board with little or no chance of increases from our respective employers as they battle to stay afloat as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

I am a pensioner and have seen the value of my retirement earnings decimated, and would like to ask the City of Joburg where they expect their citizens to find the money to pay their outrageous proposed increases?

Suggestions would be for all the highly paid management not to get any increases, cut all expenses drastically, recover all arrears from those who buy electricity on credit and ensure that anyone found to be corrupt is arrested, charged and locked up with thir assets sold to recover monies stolen.
