Empower yourself with information

- Thami Kwazi

YFM drive-time radio host DJ Sabby, pictured, is known for snappy jokes and fast tunes.

Lockdown and Covid-19 have affected his career. He shares a message of hope for the youth during Youth Month: the importance of speaking out and getting your voice.

“This pandemic is revealing so many ills in our society that have not been tackled, like job empowerment and how young people are really struggling. The relief programmes have come in handy to assist those in need.

“I am constantly reminded of the struggles people are facing on a daily basis, like not having taxi fare, money to help their families and being unable to make ends meet.

“For me, when watching the global response to the pandemic, the power of collaboration is what stands out,” he says.

“As a nation, we can bring change if we work together. The next person is just as important as you, and your behaviour and actions matter.

“With regards to the Black Lives Matter movement, black people have had these conversations so many times for so many years. Enslavement is something we are still dealing with.

“Looking at the economy you realise how difficult it is for a black person to prosper in this world.

“There are many challenges. We are going through racism everyday and have just found a way to numb the pain. It’s enough.

“Movements like Black Lives Matter is a reminder that we would like to be looked at equally. Not as murderers or thieves.

“The #MeToo, #BlackOutTuesday and Black Lives Matter movements are important in our liberation and economic empowerment.

“Continue sharing your voice, inform and empower yourself when it comes to these issues.”
