CWG sale a big success

BIDDERS: OVERSEAS INVOLVEMENT AN INDICATION OF INTEREST

Online-only auction raised more than R500 000 for the Guild’s Protégé Programme.

The annual Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction on 2 October, hosted in London by Bonhams for the second year running, made R9 856 900 and was 100% sold. An online-only sale, hosted on the Bonhams website between 17 September and 4 October, raised R554 500 for Guild’s Protégé Programme. It too was 100% sold and the money will go towards creating meaningful transformation in the South African

wine industry through education and mentorship.

Over the past few years, the Nedbank CWG Auction has attracted increasing international attention and this trend continued in 2021. This year, overseas bidders accounted for 37% of the total wine purchased with buyers from UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Namibia, Poland, Sweden, Australia and the US.

Several new records were set during the Nedbank GWG Auction including:

Cederberg Teen Die Hoog Shiraz from David Nieuwoudt at R14 667; Hartenberg CWG Auction Merlot 2018 from Carl Schultz at R6 500; Beaumont Family Wines Whole Bunch Mourvèdre 2017 by Sebastian Beaumont at R5 500;

Lismore Estate Vineyards Here Comes The Sun 2020 from Samantha O’Keefe at R7 500.

Bonhams Global Head of Wine, Richard Harvey MW, said: “The fact that both sales were 100% sold, with many new record prices and strong international interest, says much for the increasing reputation of South African wine.

Formed in 1982, the Cape Winemakers Guild is an association of 45 of South Africa’s finest winemakers.
