Klate gets one over former club Bucs

- Tsepho Ntsoelengoe

Daine Klate got his first win as a head coach in the DStv Premiership against his former side Orlando Pirates thanks to later winner by Abdi Banda (right) at Orlando Stadium yesterday.

Klate is at the helm of the Chippa first-team after being in charge of their reserve team for some time.

Klate is a former Pirates player, having played for the Buccaneers for a number of the seasons and won a number of trophies with the Soweto giants.

Heading into this game, Bucs coach Jose Reviero started with Thabiso Monyane, and Deon Hotto at wing back, after leaving them out in their previous match at Stellenbosch FC.

Pirates had plenty of chances to score, but they just could not find the back of the net and looked particularly good on the counter-attack.

The teams went into the break with the Buccaneers in control of the game, but, still they could not make much of a host of glorious chances.

Pirates were looking for a morale booster and second win of the season, having played to a draw in their last game against Stellies.

The Chilli Boys’ youngster Azola Matrose tried to instigate some attacking moves for Chippa, but also failed to break the deadlock.

But in all honesty, Pirates should have gone in at the break with the lead and had the better of the scoring chances.

Overall, for their efforts – 16 shots at goal – Pirates should have had a much better return and misfired badly.

Pirates had a perfect start to the season, with the Buccaneers grabbing a win against Swallows, but found the going tough against Chippa.

In the second half, Pirates were still on top, with Chippa not really threatening to score and Eva Nga failed to make a golden chance on the half-hour mark in the half count.

Pirates will next take on Royal AM away on Wednesday, while Chippa travel to Maritzburg United on the same day.
