Two stables lead Derby entries

CRAWFORD HAS FOUR RUNNERS AND SNAITH HAS ENTERED THREE FOR G1 EVENT

Just 11 runners have been nominated to run in the Grade 1 Cape Derby for three-year-olds over 2000m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday 24 February and they are made up by five trainers.

Two trainers dominate the entries – Brett Crawford with four and Justin Snaith with three – but it is perhaps the runners from the other three yards who could dominate the outcome of the race.

Green With Envy from the Dean Kannemeyer yard, threw his name into the hat with a superb victory in the Grade 3 Politician Stakes on Cape Met day. The race is always regarded as a Derby Trial and despite having to concede weight all round, this Gimmethegreenlight colt won with authority.

Candice Bass-Robinson has nominated filly Beach Bomb, winner of two Grade 1 races against her own sex. She won the WSB Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600m and the Cartier Paddock Stakes over 1800m in which she beat Princess Calla.

That last performance has to bring her into contention for this race as she gets a 2.5kg sex allowance and she is likely to come in as the best weighted runner, but she did run poorly in the Grade 1 Majorca Stakes last time.

Vaughan Marshall has gelding Coastal Command entered and although he is only a one-time winner, he has run close up to some decent runners.

The best of the Snaith runners looks to be Hluhluwe, who finished third in the Hollywoodbets Grade 1 Cape Guineas. It is worth noting that Snaith has engaged Daniel Muscutt, who rode Double Superlative to victory in the WSB Cape Town Met, to ride this son of Trippi.

Also run at the meeting is the Grade 2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes over 1200m and the entries include Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m runner-up Thunderstruck, who will enjoy the additional 200m this time.

Supplementary entries close at 11:00 on Friday, 16 February with declarations by 11:00 on Monday, 19 February.
