Streaming gains more traction

Two in three US adults prefer watching movies on streaming than in theatres, according to an American study.

This trend is largely explained by the convenience and flexibility offered by streaming services, as well as by the great variety of content available online.

In a nutshell, streaming is simpler, more practical and less expensive.

The latest HarrisX study for IndieWire reveals that out of 1 000 American adults, only 34% prefer to watch movies in theatres.

“The competition continues between streaming services and the Hollywood engine,” Alli Brady, vice-president at HarrisX, told IndieWire.

“While we still see evidence of loyal movie-goers in recent box office numbers, our study shows that two in three movie watchers prefer to stream movies at home.

“Despite this causing some upheaval for the industry, it also means the demand for content is only increasing – nearly half of consumers say they stream movies weekly, more than seven times as frequently as those who [watch] in theatres.”

According to the survey, 30% of people stream a movie at least twice a week. With more demand, the catalogues of streaming platforms have become an undeniable asset in attracting and winning over new subscribers in search of new discoveries.

According to a Tubi report, three quarters of Gen Zs and Millennials prefer original content to remakes.

The majority of people (53%) who prefer to wait for movies to reach streaming cite the price of cinema tickets as a key reason.

Comfort is also a concern. While 37% appreciate the seats in theatres, as well as the refreshments (32%), a majority (40%) prefer the comfort of their own home for watching films.

A further 15% cite the inconvenience of going to the movies, including travel time, traffic jams and parking. –
