NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
Treat for food fundis as Greek food mingles with Italian:
THERE’S a new kid on the restaurant block and it looks set to take the city by storm. Situated at Brookes on the Bay, La Kouzina combines a winning mix of delicious food, superb service and classy décor.
It’s not surprising that meticulous attention to detail has gone into this newest venture of veteran restaurateurs George and Dawn Castis.
The couple, who own Coachman on the Bay, have built up a solid reputation as hands-on owners who value service and customer satisfaction – above all.
La Kouzina, which can be found next door to Primi Piatti, offers a varied menu that includes Greek and Italian dishes, wood-fired pizzas, shawarmas and a sushi bar.
On our visit we opted to try the sushi as a starter with waitress Victoria quick to suggest the four-piece signature roll at R44 and the salmon, avocado and caviar rolls at a cost of R38.
Both were delicious, fresh and beautifully prepared with the signature roll unlike any sushi we have sampled before – filled with salmon and cream cheese and a crunchy bite; it might just be the best we have sampled in the Bay.
For mains, my husband opted for the lamb shawarma which comes with a choice of tzatziki, hummus, tahini or sweet chilli sauce. He chose the tzatziki and pronounced it faultless.
At a cost of R75, served with chips, the massive portion proved challenging to finish.
But finish he did, as it was just too tasty to leave.
I decided to try the pasta and chose the Alfredo which also cost R75. I deliberated though as I was keen on a bacon dish but Victoria suggested she could just replace the ham in the Alfredo with bacon – and I was sold.
Once again the portion was plentiful. I gave up and took half home for dinner.
When the bill came, we were pleasantly surprised to see it coming in at less than R300 – a reasonable price when one considers starters and mains were included as well as a glass of wine and a whisky.
We will be back to try more of the fare on offer at Port Elizabeth’s newest little gem.
