INDEPENDENT rap group Phfat is heading to Port Elizabeth on an Eastern Cape tour to wow crowds with their international sound tomorrow at Pool City in Walmer. The duo, fresh from their Australian tour, said audiences could expect to hear their popular songs from their 2014 album Happiness Machine, including a new track they released while touring ‘Down Under’ called Panic at Cluster B.

Band member Smooth Mike said: “The new track was a bit of a detour from our last, but we decided it was time to kind of scramble our brains quickly, just to remind ourselves we can still make music people want to listen to and almost certainly won’t get onto radio.”

The band, based in Cape Town, made sure their “cool sharp edges” weren’t lost while recording their new track.

“It’s good to make sure all of the cool sharp edges in your music still exist, because music without any rough edges is safe music, and safe music is disposable and boring,” the band said.

The electronic rap duo jumped onto the South African music scene when they opened for Public Enemy at The Assem- bly in Cape Town in December 2010 and 500 gigs later, they’ve returned from their second Australian tour.

PHFAT has three albums already under their name, having released their debut album Dinosaur Blood in 2011.

The duo wants to release all their music for free.

“One person described our music as being ‘offensive’ but very funny and particularly special in a live setting,” Mike said.

ý Tickets are R60 before 10pm and R80 after.
