Magistrate orders Cunningham to leave dad in peace

- Riaan Marais maraisr@timesmedia.co.za

ASSAULT accused Brent Cunningham is not allowed to contact or visit his father or ex-girlfriend in terms of two uncontested protection orders brought against the 23-year-old yesterday.

The former body builder and fitness trainer is a shadow of his former self, having lost much muscle and weight during his time in custody. The once clean-cut and image-conscious Cunningham was unshaven yesterday and his hair was cut short, with bits of grey visible.

Appearing in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court twice yesterday, Cunningham first stood before magistrate Morne Cannon in connection with a plea agreement related to the assault of his father Malcolm, 56.

Cunningham has been in and out of court recently as one delay after another has prevented the plea agreement from being finalised.

The case is scheduled to return to court on April 29 for a report from a correctional officer.

Cunningham later appeared before magistrate Gavin Juicy where his father and his ex-girlfriend Sharon Roberts both brought protection orders.

Malcolm and Roberts arrived at the court together and were called in one after the other. Cunningham did not oppose the applications. Cunningham was arrested in January after allegedly assaulting Roberts.

He was released on bail, only to be arrested days later in connection with the alleged assault on his father at the Lorraine townhouse they shared. He has been in custody since.
