Aussie icon partners son to record win
AUSTRALIAN surf lifesaving legend Trevor Hendy rewrote the record books with a stunning board rescue victory, partnering his son TJ, to beat a field of elite surf competitors at the 100th edition of the Aussie titles.
The event sees one team member swimming out to a buoy, while the second member awaits their retrieval signal to race out on the Malibu board.
Hendy, at 46 years-old, claimed that the victory with his 20-year-old son was beyond belief and better than any win in an illustrious career that saw the Surfers Paradise Club member ascend to international icon status.
Besides breaking records on the beach, the bronzed Aussie dated supermodels and even appeared on episodes of Bay Watch alongside the Hoff and Pamela Anderson.
Hendy has also mentored South African Ironman champions such as Matthew Bouman and Wade Krieger, while they lived down-under competing on the ultra-competitive Ironman circuit.
Last weekend it was reported that our National Surf Champs would coincide with the Aussies, which was incorrect.
Our Nationals will conclude today on Battery Beach, hosted by Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club.
Thereafter, the best paddlers in the country will vie for a Springbok blazer during the National Surfski trial on Monday, utilising the long-standing King of the Bay event, which starts at the head waters of the Durban Harbour and ends at Addington Beach.
Race organiser and top paddler Barry Lewin has taken over from where iconic surfski series pioneer Billy Harker left off with aplomb, organising world-class paddling events.
Durban in winter is arguably one the best places in the world for outdoor sports.
Defending South African champion Sean Rice will be hoping to take out paddling legend Hank McGregor and throw down a message ahead of the World Championships later in the year.
Michelle Burn, who has made a dramatic return to the sport after giving birth, will be looking to build on her stunning performances of the past.
Burn lost out on a maiden ICF World Surfski title in 2013 after a navigational error in the closing 3km in Portugal, giving up a 300m lead.
In surfing news, our lone ranger on the World Surf League elite tour, Jordy Smith, seems to be running into bad luck of late.
Smith was in for a great result at the third stop of the tour at the Drug Aware Pro in Margaret River, but was side-lined due to a bad ligament injury after a nasty wipe-out while free-surfing.
