VP in clean sweep against Westering
IN a highly anticipated schools rugby derby at Victoria Park on Saturday, the hosts edged their western rivals Westering 6-3.
In difficult, windy conditions, the match started at a fast tempo, with VP making most of the play but struggling to capitalise on quality possession.
Westering had a good defensive system and managed to stop numerous scoring attempts from VP.
VP took the lead with a penalty from fullback and captain Roshaan Stembull.
Westering’s defensive efforts won them turnovers on a regular basis and they were able to apply pressure on VP, resulting in a successful penalty to make it 3-3 at half time.
VP dominated the set pieces and made most of the play but continued to struggle with their finishing. However, five minutes from the end, Stembull kicked his second penalty and VP stayed in control to claim victory.
Girls’ hockey
VICTORIA Park continued their aim of improving on each result from the 2014 season to defeat Westering 2-0.
Westering goalkeeper Kerryn Frost played a big role in keeping VP at bay until just before half time when some good teamwork saw Caitlin Wenlock slot the opening goal.
The second half was closely contested until just before the final whistle when VP received a penalty corner.
The corner was awarded a further three times as the pressure built, but finally VP captain Nicky Veto found the net to finish the match at 2-0 for her team.
Boys’ hockey
THE VP first team walked away with the honours, dominating from the start and ending up with a 2-1 victory.
In a game that ebbed and flowed from one end to the other, VP scored in the first 10 minutes, while Westering equalised from a penalty corner just before the end of the half.
In the second half, Kyle Hodgekinson ensured VP’s win with their second goal to complete the scoring at 2-1.
