Kingswood’s fortunes mixed in Queenstown

-

AFTER their loss to Hudson last week, the Kingswood girls hockey team hit back to defeat Girls High School in Queenstown 2-0 at the weekend.

GHS started off well, before the Grahamstown side slowly took control of the match after having to wait until late in the first half for their first goal when a break by Aimee-Leigh Pote set up Emma Fraser for the finish.

Kingswood later showed more dominance but missed some crucial opportunities. GHS put the Kingswood side under pressure at times but came up against a resolute defence, with Khanyi Kuzwayo making three important saves.

In the second half, Kingswood completed a superb team effort, which ended with Kate von Holdt scoring.

After some intricate interplay, Pote again made a decisive break and sent a perfect pass for Von Holdt to score.

Kingswood showed a never-say-die attitude as speedy fullback Athi Halom intercepted to go on a 50m run before finding wing James Russell, who scored an unconverted try. The visitors added a further converted try by Halom to lead 25-24 at half time.

After the break the hosts scored first through centre Bulela Sotyelwa. Mattheus reduced the deficit with a penalty, but Queen’s scored again through Mihlali Peter to lead 36-28.

Scrumhalf Mark Webber dived over for the visitors, for Mattheus to convert, making it 36-35. Queen’s seized the moment when fullback Yaw Penxe scored. Wagener converted to seal the win for Queen’s 43-35.
