Humewood double for Holden
MICHAEL Holden continued his dominant form in the Humewood Golf Club championships at the weekend by achieving the double of the strokeplay and matchplay titles.
The previous weekend, the left-handed Holden took the strokeplay event with solid rounds of 76 and 73, and there was no stopping him in the A division final on Sunday.
After securing his spot in the 36-hole title playoff, he took control of his match against Jacque Smith and coasted to a 9/8 victory.
It was a day of decisive wins in the matchplay finals because Reg Haupt took the B division title with a 13/12 win over Mark Jeffery, and Nick Scheepers triumphed in the C division with a 9/8 result over Lyle Ferreira.
Holden’s win means he has won the club title five times.
“It was a good contest in great weather,” Holden said, “and Jacque had a good first nine. He could easily have gone four up at the ninth and the 10th, but then I managed to get my act together and had a good run from 13 to 17, winning five in a row.
“Then on the third nine, I managed to birdie the second, fourth and eighth holes and was able to get ahead.”
