IT WAS a bittersweet day on Wednesday when St George’s College bid farewell to its campus head and unveiled a new school badge.

Jonathan Liss, a former St George’s Preparatory principal and head of the St George’s College campus, bid farewell to pupils, teachers and sponsors, ending his 18-year involvement with the schools in order to pursue new ventures in Cape Town.

Alex Hall has been named as the man to take over as the new principal.

“The true test of character comes when the stakes are high”, Liss told pupils in his farewell speech.

Quoting from the late US professor Randy Pausch’s

he said: “Hold your ideals above yourself.”

Liss thanked his colleagues for their efforts in making the preparatory school a success as well as for helping put together the foundation for the college.

He was thanked personally by the co-founders as well as head girl Skye Leask, who recounted her experience in the preparatory school when Liss offered her advice that helped her overcome an academic slump in Grade 5.

The event included the presence of Gavin Harvey and Gary McWilliams, who contributed in no small measure to the educational institution’s success.

The original pupil body of seven has increased to more than 100 in recent years.

The event featured a performance by the school band of St George’s Preparatory.

The college pupils honoured Liss by reciting the school’s mission and vision statement as well as offering a notion of prayer.

The day was not sombre at all as it included the unveiling of the school’s new, redesigned emblem which will now be woven into school uniforms and placed upon the billboard in front of the school.
