Security staff called in to eject Malema

- Jan-Jan Joubert

EFF leader Julius Malema was forcibly ejected from parliament last night by 16 “bouncers” after he refused to retract his description of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as a murderer.

National Assembly chairwoman Grace Boroto ordered Malema to retract the statements that Ramaphosa had been an accessory to murder at the Marikana massacre, and was a murderer.

Malema refused to do so and repeated the statements.

Boroto then ordered him to leave the chamber, which he refused to do.

Following the new rules of parliament, she called serjeant-at-arms Regina Mohlommi to remove Malema, but Mohlommi failed. Boroto then called in parliament’s security staff, recently recruited from the police.

Sixteen of them went into the chamber and escorted Malema out.

As he left, Malema said he would never retract his accusations and that the EFF was being treated like the Marikana miners, but was used to it.

He said parliament was supposedly a place of freedom of speech and a “holy” place, but the ANC did not respect this.

He also said the parliamentary rules were unconstitutional.

Malema was accompanied by screaming EFF MPs through the corridors of the parliament building.

He did not expect any further punishment from parliament.
