U’hage-PE relay debuts on Sunday

EASTERN Cape schools, both high and primary, will be chasing lucrative prizes in the relay section of the One City relay and marathon on Sunday.

The inaugural event has prize money of more than R300 000 and will start at Uitenhage’s Muir College, finishing at the Port Elizabeth City Hall.

The start and finish of the race will be switched annually.

In the schools relay, teams of eight will compete for the winners’ purse of R4 000 in both primary and high school categories, plus a bonus amount of R10 000 for the winners.

The teams finishing second and third will receive R1 600 and R1 200 respective­ly.

The winning teams in the senior men’s and women’s category will pocket R20 000 each, with prize money going down to 10th place.

The total prize money in the marathon is more than R100 000, with the winners in the men’s and women’s categories pocketing R10 000 each.

Even the prize money in the various age categories is nothing to scoff at, the winners receiving R3 000 and the second and third places R2 000 and R1 500 respective­ly.

Entry fee for the club relay teams is R200, while school teams will pay R150.

Entry forms are available from all sports shops in the metro.

The R1-million event is sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipali­ty.
