Mazda CX-5 for discerning drivers

‘Underrated’ star offers Skyactiv technology

- Bobby Cheetham

WHAT a pleasant surprise driving the Mazda CX 5 2.2L DE Akera AWD Automatic turned out to be. World of Wheels recently had the vehicle to evaluate for a few days and we came away singing the praises of this mid-sized SUV. We were not alone in our appreciation of this vehicle, which was launched last year.

A leading South African car magazine saw the Madza CX 5 chosen as the “most underrated product in the special car award” category.

The Mazda CX-5 is available with a 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre petrol engine, as well as a 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel, our test vehicle.

With particular attention to design, dynamic performance, functionality, environmental and safety performance; the CX-5 offers motorists a stylish vehicle with a predictable and responsive driving experience.

As the first new generation vehicle to adopt Mazda’s breakthrough Skyactiv technology and Kodo – the vehicle offers more power, more torque and more kilometres per litre for overall vehicle efficiency.

We particularly like the new-generation LED headlamps and gunmetal 19-inch alloy wheels, giving the exterior a more premium design expression. Although the rims will show the slightest scratch.

With an LED array, the LED light source for the high beams is divided into four blocks which can be switched on and off independently.

The system uses a camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles or the taillights of cars ahead, and turns off only the light-source block, which is illuminating in the specific direction of the other vehicles.

This makes it possible to drive with the high beams on at all times, significantly improving visibility when driving at night, without dazzling drivers of other vehicles. The system also features wide-distribution low beams.

By adding an LED light source to the side of the headlights, wide-distribution low beams expand the area of illumination on either side of the vehicle, illuminating areas where traditional headlights cannot.

This makes it easier to see pedestrians and other obstacles at intersections at night.

In addition, ALH utilises the motor of the headlights’ auto-levelling mechanism to automatically raise the axis of lighting when travelling at highway speeds, making it easier to see road signs and obstacles as early as possible.

Then there is the MZD Connect infotainment system; a simple to operate system that allows easy access to internet radio streaming and social networking services that many drivers consider essential.

The electronic parking brake, which replaces the conventional handbrake, is a new feature. Satellite navigation is standard. The 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine produces 129kW of power and a muscular 420Nm of torque; using just 5.7 litres of fuel per 100km claim Mazda. Although in real world driving conditions it can vary.

With a two-stage turbocharger maximising power and efficiency, the engine is able to meet strict Euro stage IV emissions standards without the need for expensive after-treatment of exhaust gasses.

On the road the car is easy to drive, has more than enough power to overtake at the legal limit and has good general driving dynamics. Price: R513 700 (including VAT). The vehicle is designed and built to the highest standard of performance and reliability.

This standard is backed up by a three-year unlimited kilometre factory warranty.

To provide complete peace of mind motoring, a three-year roadside assistance, a three-year service plan and a five-year corrosion warranty are also included.
