TWO suspected car thieves are fighting for their lives in hospital while two others were arrested after crashing an allegedly stolen car near St Albans prison yesterday afternoon.

According to police, the four men stole the Mazda Sting at about midday as it was parked outside a doctor’s surgery in Jacob Street, Humansdorp.

By 3.30pm one of the men who escaped following the crash had been nabbed while trying to hitch-hike.

Police Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the car’s details were put out on police systems shortly after the theft.

“The vehicle was spotted on the N2 heading towards Port Elizabeth.

“A car chase followed the men’s failing to stop for the police,” he said.

“As the Mazda approached the St Albans interchange, it rolled.”

Nkohli said three men were arrested on the scene, two of them seriously injured.

“The driver escaped into the bushes, and a manhunt was launched.”

By 3.30pm, Neighbourhood Watch group Farm Comm had mobilised.

Farm Comm chairman Willie Bosch said the man was arrested on the Seaview Road.

Late yesterday, the two injured men were under police guard at Livingstone Hospital. The other two were taken back to Humansdorp, where they are expected to appear in the magistrate’s court on Monday.
