Diverse lineup in Jazz’Afro
THE Port Elizabeth Opera House will host a lineup of diverse musicians in the upcoming season of its popular Jazz’Afro Sunday sessions.
Speaking at the launch of the second cycle at Kwanceba in New Brighton yesterday, Opera House general manager Monde Ngonyama said this edition would be more inclusive than before.
“This cycle will be more inclusive [racially and musically] with the emphasis being on the bands and the quality of their craft,” he said.
“We want it to be consistent with the expectations of the audience.”
The sessions are hosted by the Opera House with sponsorship from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the provincial Department of Sports, Arts, Recreation and Culture.
Artistic manager Nobesuthu Rayi said they had received 75 artist submissions which led to this cycle being split into two parts.
The first, comprising 12 shows, will start next Sunday October 2 and run until January 29 while the second half will start on the first Sunday of February.
“Out of 75 bands I had to choose only 12 for this year because of limited resources. However, we are planning to have a session on October 4 with the rest of the bands that submitted to determine our lineup from February until end April.”
Artists featured this year are the Mojazz band, Mahesh Narotam as well as legends Lawrence Matshiza and Lami Zokufa, who will be sharing a show.
