Week to go before Nelson Mandela Bay Train race action
ONLY one week remains before the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race roars into action from Port Elizabeth station at 9am next Sunday – and time is running out for teams to secure their entries.
No late entries will be accepted after 5pm on Wednesday.
Interested participants are urged to secure their spots.
The unique biathlon-style relay race against a Metrorail train is open to teams comprising five runners and one mountain bike cyclist.
It is well supported by Bay companies and organisations, with more than 150 teams expected for next weekend.
One of the regular teams at the event is Toby’s Motors Caltex of Walmer.
Toby’s Motors owner John Parry and his staff have entered since the event was revived in 2014 and have become proud supporters of Zsports Events NPC.
Toby’s Motors Caltex general manager J J Johnstone said: “Besides promoting a healthy lifestyle and ensuring that our participating staff stay fit and healthy, events like these go a long way in boosting camaraderie and staff morale.
“We believe in teamwork and striving for the same goals – taking part in this event has become a huge favourite with us.”
Not only does the garage enter a team annually, but it also secures seats on the train for other staff, who ensure that the Toby’s team are supported all the way.
Not only had this become a popular fun outing, Johnstone said, but it also provided Toby’s Motors with an opportunity to support Bay business and communities.
“We challenge Bay companies to get involved in the NMB Train Race.
“It is up to each one of us to ensure the viability and future of this type of event.”
Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer (CECM) chief operating officer Pat Kelly said that as the official fuel sponsor of Zsports Events, it had been exciting to see the support and growth of events like the train race.
“We are a proudly Eastern Cape company that believes education and sport play a major role in the development of well-rounded individuals.
“[This] will in turn make a positive contribution to the Bay economy.
“Sport assists in building individual character, promotes a positive approach, encourages team spirit and a sense of selfdiscipline
“[These] are all positive attributes for the individual and have a definite spinoff that contributes to a healthy family and work environment!”
Caltex EC will also take part in the race, coordinate a changeover point and play host to key stakeholders on the train this year.
Online registration for the event before next Wednesday is essential, with no late or “on the day” entries accepted.
Registered teams are to collect their race packs from the Love Story offices in Albany Road next Thursday between 11am and 3pm.
Race batons will be handed out at the PE station from 7am on the Sunday morning.
Spectator tickets for the train are only available before race day from the Zsports offices at North End Lake or online at www.TrainRace.co.za
Tickets, not for sale on race day, are selling out quickly
