Bobbies on the beat in PE

- Tebuho Zongwana

PORT Elizabeth Police will shift their focus to traditional rivals East London Police when they face off in the Gold Cup at Kemsley Park tomorrow (3.30pm).

The PE bobbies will be looking at getting back to winning ways after a disappointing 40-24 defeat at the hands of Pretoria Police at Loftus Versfeld last week.

“I feel as though we played very well. We were leading after 60 minutes, but then we let our concentration slip and allowed them to score three soft tries. We threw away four clear-cut chances in the first half,” PE Police manager Marius van der Walt said.

According to Van der Walt, sticking to the game plan that has been working for them will be the trick in overcoming EL Police.

“We will stick to what has worked for us and we will make sure that we build up pressure and improve our finishing,” he said.

In their last Gold Cup encounter, PE emerged victorious by four points in what was then known as the Community Cup in 2014.

EL Police kicked of their Gold Cup campaign with a loss against Sishen, of North West.

“EL Police will go all out for the win. They will give the ball some air and will be running from everywhere. We will have to be at our best,” Van der Walt said.

PE Police continue to be plagued by injuries with flanker Frans Gerber and Hannes Huisamen both ruled out with injuries sustained in Pretoria last week.

ý With the Grand Challenge having ended over a month ago, clubs will be back in action when the Mayoral Cup kicks off next Saturday.

The competition comprises eight teams from the different leagues (Grand Challenge Cup and Shield) and will feature five different divisions of EP club rugby leagues.

The teams will compete in two pools of four according to their respective divisions.
