CHIPPA United’s Disiki Challenge skipper, Yurigg Conwood, says his U20 national soccer team call-up could open up the door for him to join the club’s first team.

Conwood will be part of Amajita’s eight-day preliminary training camp in Johannesburg in preparation for the African Youth Championship.

The 19-year-old part-time civil engineering student at PE College believes the call up will also give him national and international exposure.

He said this was not only a huge achievement for him, but also for his mother.

“I am very excited about the call up,” Conwood said.

“I just want to say thank you to both my coaches, the club and all the people who have supported me.

“I want to make my region proud and represent the country well as we go into the preparations of the African Youth Championship.

“I am very positive that after this great things will happen. Hopefully, by the end of this year or beginning of next year I will be in the first team set-up.

“The call up will also give me some exposure not only on an national stage but also internationally.

“The camp will start from tomorrow, so today I will be making my way to Johannesburg,” he said.

Conwood, of Gelvandale and a former Saints FC player, said he planned to gain as much experience as he could at the camp.

“It will be a great experience because I will learn something new,” he said.

“I would like to go there gain more experience and come back and give back to my club – and to show them what I have learnt at the camp.”
