College on target in rifle championships

-

FIVE St Andrew’s College shooters took part in the South African air rifle championships which were held in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, recently.

Without exception, each marksman produced his best-ever scores.

In the Olympic event, Nathan Graham breached the 90% average, a step towards reaching selection status for a possible representative team.

John Kelly breached the 500 score, closely followed by Alex Gess, just short of that milestone.

Michael Mager and Graham competed in the three-position precision event, and were part of the Eastern Cape team of four, having been joined by Gabriella Walker (DSG) and Jane van Geems (Aliwal North).

The team brought home the silver medal, behind Gauteng.

The college’s individual championship was also held recently.

In the archery section, College has a new champion in Carel van de Wall who beat Grant Price in the final.

In the air rifle section, another new champion emerged in Nathan Graham, closely followed by John Kelly.

In the parents’ and sons’ match, Andrew and Michael Mager ran out the winners.

The floating trophy for the most improved shooter was awarded to John Kelly and shooting towels to Alex Gess and John Kelly.
