Family fun at Oktoberfest

- Riaan Marais maraisr@timesmedia.co.za

PUT on your lederhosen and polish your favourite beer mug, because Port Elizabeth’s own Oktoberfest is back, and it promises to be a great event for the whole family.

The German Club in Lorraine has already hosted two corporate events, on Wednesday and yesterday, while tonight will see the introduction of the annual event’s student night.

Tomorrow night promises to be the biggest party of the extended festival, at which Miss Oktoberfest will be crowned, and on Sunday everyone is welcome when the festivities end with a family day.

German Club assistant manager Peter Allan said the event was not only for party animals, but offered something for everyone, from businesses looking to treat employees and clients, to families wanting to spend a day out together.

“Traditionally our Saturday night is the busiest,” Allan said, “with adults of all ages coming together to enjoy traditional German music and food.

“Sunday is the only day under-18s are allowed and we always see many families coming together.”

He said the event usually drew between 7 000 and 8 000 people over the extended weekend, and this year promised to be no different. “Our second corporate night was fully booked. “We hope the introduction of student night, when students receive a voucher to spend inside the festival, also draws more people from the younger crowd.”

Visitors can look forward to traditional German cuisine, dirndl-clad waitresses and, of course, thousands of litres of beer.

Allan said car services like Uber and Goodfellas would be there for those requiring a ride home.
