Conservation lodge able to trumpet its success
AN EASTERN Cape game reserve has been named by glossy conservation and travel magazine Africa Geographic as one of the top five places in Africa to view elephants.
Safari Lodge in the Amakhala Game Reserve, between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, heads the list which also includes getaways in Mpumalanga, Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania.
The list is featured in the magazine’s latest edition, which has put together “five of the best places to get fabulous pachyderm experiences in Africa”.
Amakhala’s Safari Lodge’s coverage includes an admiring blurb and close-up picture of a big tusker.
“This beautiful lodge is located on the 7 200ha Amakhala Game Reserve . . . adjacent to the famed Addo Elephant National Park – widely regarded as the country’s premier destination for elephant viewing.
“Game drives are taken on both the Amakhala reserve and in Addo.”
Amakhala was co-founded by wildlife veterinarian Dr William Fowlds, a leading voice in the rhino anti-poaching lobby.
Elephant numbers are not revealed for security reasons but there is a substantial herd.
Amakhala marketing manager Emily Stemmett, who had not yet heard the news, said yesterday she was thrilled.
“I think what makes us special is our forward-thinking ecology department and our big anti-poaching team which keep our animals safe,” she said.
“I think the great elephant sightings we enjoy are due to years and years of our ellies being respected by our rangers.
“This means they are very comfortable with vehicles and guests alike – allowing for a close but safe interaction.”
