Three out of nine vying to win Guineas Plate

- Punters’ Pal

THREE fillies should make sure of an exciting battle in the main race at the Fairview track in Port Elizabeth today.

Nine three-year-old fillies will do battle in the Guineas Plate over 1 400m, but most eyes will be on three very promising competitors.

It will be a surprise if the winner of the race does not come from Hurricane Shelley, Star Burst Galaxy or Candy Crush.

Star Burst Galaxy won her first start in Port Elizabeth in impressive fashion when she had not done much work at her new stable.

She will be fitter today and, although taking on stronger this time, another fine performance can be expected.

Hurricane Shelley won three of her last four starts and seems to be improving with every run. She does have top weight to carry but looks set for another good performance.

Candy Crush is another to keep an eye on. She was the runner-up in her last two starts and will carry 4kg less than Hurricane Shelley and 2kg less than Star Burst Galaxy.

It looks yet again like a very competitive meeting of eight races. We tipped you the popular Place Accumulator last Friday and will be aiming to follow up on that.

The Grant Paddock stable should get punters off to a good start in the first two races with the respective favourites, Villanelle and British Fairy.

The season is not even four months old and Bay champion trainer Alan Greeff is already closing in on 50 winners.

He started the season with a bang and has 41 winners to his name.

Greg Cheyne also got away well in his quest to regain the jockey title.

Cheyne was out of action for most of last season with a foot injury, but has ridden 24 winners at Fairview since August.

It is still early days but it looks as if it will be very hard to keep Greeff and Cheyne away from winning some more titles in the Eastern Cape.

There is still lots to look forward to at Fairview this month with next Friday’s International Jockeys Challenge a day not to be missed.
