PAYING MUNICIPAL BILLS

YOU save, you pay and only then you get something free. Remember the incentive from Eskom? Stay below 250 units per month and you get a free token? We did. Why not inspire people to save on electricity and water, and to pay their rates and taxes every month by giving them free tokens? Why punish the frugal, the aged, the poor, and those who pay their accounts every month and have done so for many years? Could Athol Trollip make a difference? R B, FOREST HILL, PORT ELIZABETH

SOME people are excited about disconnection of electricity of the unemployed and purportedly believe the crowd of people filling municipal treasury offices are there to pay their bills. Actually it’s not, they go to the ATTP (assistance to the poor) offices for applications. You rarely see massive numbers going to the cashiers. So stop lying to yourselves that people are paying their rates now. CONCERNED

I SUGGEST those who have municipal account queries, and possibly pre-paid meters also, should declare a dispute where appropriate with the municipality in writing, which prevents the municipality from cutting your services during the dispute resolution process. BILL

NOTICE NOT CLEAR REGARDING DEPOSITS

THE NMBM notice regarding a deposit for security services is not clear. Is the deposit amount indicated above the statement date the amount paid or amount due? Also how much of our money is being paid to EOH Mthombo to verify what the so-called normal contractor is being paid to do, also with our money? DAVE MOULANG, SUMMERSTRAND, PORT ELIZABETH

SO is crybaby Brian Molefe now going to work officially for the Guptas? PAUL

HAVE TO LOVE DEMOCRACY

DONALD Trump was castigated for not confirming that he would accept the result of the US election. Now those who were doing the castigating are protesting against the results of the election. Democracy, you’ve got to love it! DERRICK FELLOWS

DONALD Trump should now pass a law making it a crime of treason to burn or disrespect the country’s flag! Nail them. NATIONALIST

SO Trevor Noah is dismayed by Trump’s win? Who gives a hoot about his opinion? Viva Trump. TRUMP SUPPORTER

BRANCHES DUMPED ON MY VERGE

TO the folks who paid the donkey cart men to remove two large yellowwood tree branches on Thursday last week, they simply dumped them in Lloyd Road on my verge. DOC

FARM MURDERS

FARMERS must slam murders on farms where workers have access to the CCMA on living conditions. Yet farmers have no control over dying by murder. Mr M Sume (“Workers slam conditions on farms”, November 7), show some loyalty as farmers and workers offer food security to the employed and unemployed. AL PEREIRA, MOUNT CROIX, PORT ELIZABETH

STUDENT PROTESTS

GOOD letter, Norman Kemp (“The real motive behind the student protests”, November 14). You hit the nail on the head – spiteful, lazy “students” allowed to disrupt universities. Kick them out. C BRENT

“NMMU sets up secret classes” (November 14): the situation is not ideal for anyone from the ground up. Suck it up you, whingeing, whining students. You have had eight weeks to stay on top of your work. Appreciate what’s being done. How can being given an opportunity under extreme circumstances to complete your year be seen as “setting you up to fail”? Grow a backbone. CDK

WAS REFEREE ‘CAPTURED’?

JUDGING from the dubious penalty awarded to Bafana against Senegal one can only assume that the referee was “captured”.

MALCOLM DODDS, SHERWOOD, PORT ELIZABETH
