Amazing job to create new venue

-

THREE extremely passionate NMMU staff members, with the blessings of the vice-chancellor, are responsible for creating, from absolute scratch, an emergency alternative – the varsity at the stadium. There were no guidelines to follow because this has never been attempted in South Africa, possibly in the world.

These humble heroines, working closely with the municipality, the Bay chamber of commerce, private businesses and the lecturers who have come on board, have created nothing short of a miracle. Their 18-hour days continue to be the norm to ensure that what has been started continues to the very end.

Wiring for lights and the operation of computers, etc was installed in the unfinished portion of the stadium currently on loan to NMMU. Truckloads of equipment, furniture, etc, under heavy guard, was moved from NMMU to the stadium. No detail was overlooked. What was not mentioned in Monday’s front page article (“NMMU sets up secret classes”) is the extremely large numbers of male and female students who are overcome with emotion when they see what incredible efforts have been made for them.

For those complaining about excessive security to enter the stadium, it is for your protection. Police and security officers, wearing both uniforms and civvies, are present in large numbers inside and outside the stadium.

Anyone creating a disturbance is arrested.

Regarding students and lecturers being notified the night before lectures or tests, this is due both to security and the mammoth challenge of scheduling.

To the NMMU #FeesMustFall leaders, you have been defeated. A number of protesters have broken ranks and are studying at the stadium.

To those students who have worked extremely hard and gone the extra mile while the NMMU campus was closed, you have built immense character. May your academic efforts at the stadium be well rewarded.

To those finding reasons to complain, rather give thanks to the three amazing NMMU women who believed they could make a difference. Thousands of students, because of passionate people behind the scenes, will be able to finish their academic year.

A very proud PE citizen, South End, Port Elizabeth
