Double Wicket swings into play

- Alvin Reeves reevesa@timesmedia.co.za

SIXES and fours will be the order of the day when the 13th annual Gelvandale Double Wicket is contested at the club tomorrow.

There will not be much time for batsmen to get their eyes in as a swinging willow will be the only likely path to victory.

The 10 teams taking part are Mecer Madibaz 1, Madibaz 2, Gelvandale, PECC, Jendamark United, Seaman’s Renault Old Grey, Grey High, Motherwell, Northville and an invitation team.

Established in 1979, Gelvandale has produced a number of quality players who have gone on to play franchise and Proteas cricket.

Robin Peterson, Ashwell Prince, Garnett Kruger, Alviro Petersen and Wayne Parnell have all made a name for themselves in recent years.

But the club has not only produced these top-level players. It has also contributed much to the development of cricket in the Eastern Province in general, and the northern areas in particular.

Some of their future stars will be on show this weekend as they take on the best double-wicket pairings in the province.

The first round consists of two overs per team, with the winners and losers progressing to different sections for the next round.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played over three overs per team.

The winners’ final will consist of four overs per team and the losers’ three overs.

Registration is R200 per team and proceedings start at 9am. Total prize money of R3 500 and various individual rewards are up for grabs.

There will be food stalls and a jumping castle, and a KFC mini-cricket clinic will be played from 7- 8.30am.

ý For those clubs not playing in the double-wicket, today there are two games of NMB Premier League cricket.

A good tussle is expected between SA Home Loans Union and SuperSpar Despatch in Park Drive.

In the other game today, newcomers Schauderville host Heatherbank in what could be another tight affair.

On Sunday, PECC travel to face Buco Uitenhage while Gelvandale host Seaman’s Renault Old Grey.
