Go down memory lane at Southender

- Brett Adkins

IT stands in a pocket of South End which reminds you of how vibrant and charming this historical part of Port Elizabeth once was – and, thanks to little bustling gems like this, still is.

You can pop into The Southender pub most week nights to find a most interesting collection of patrons assembled to wet their respective whistles and talk about any number of topics of the day.

Here the vibe just seems so much warmer and chattier.

That’s thanks in no small part to the cosiness of this watering hole which has been around in Webber Street for about 20 years and in that time has undergone an interior facelift but has not lost any of the reminiscing, rustic magic of its humble, old-world exterior.

The pub is housed in one of South End’s old corrugated iron cottages and once inside, it’s easy to settle in with your favourite tipple and either watch some sport, or soak up many of the evocative images of the suburb back in the day. To quench the thirst, there is draught on tap as well as a full collection of spirits, coolers, ciders, shooters, wine and bottled beers for you to choose from.

One of the special features of The Southender is its quaint outside terrace and courtyard which is an ideal part of the venue to park off and chill with sundowners. Memory lane just got a whole lot more refreshing here.

ý The Southender is at 29 Webber Street, South End. Contact them on 083-654-6679.
