Swim, walk or run ... and have fun in the sun

-

SUNDAY sees the last round of the Bay’s aQuellé Ocean Racing Series of the year taking place at Hobie Beach from 9am.

Already in its 12th season, the popular family beach series is Africa’s largest family beach event, with an average attendance of nearly 500 people on race mornings this season.

There is no minimum age – the youngest at the moment is one and the oldest 76, says Michael Zoetmulder of Zsports Events NPC, who created the series.

“Lots of families come down. A typical scenario is Dad does one of the swim races, Mom does the walk or run and the kids do the kids’ 1km run – everyone’s happy,” he said.

The last race day two Sundays ago delivered great weather and so far the forecast looks good for this Sunday.

There are seven events that all take place at the same time. For open water swimmers, there are four swim events to choose from (400m, 1km, 2km and 3km). On land there’s a 5km beach run, 5km beach walk or, for children 12 years and under, a 1km beach run/walk. It’s the 1km event that has seen little ones as young as a year taking part.

Races start at 9am with registration at the beach from 7.30am, followed by prize-giving from 10am, with all participants in the kids’ 1km beach run getting finishers’ medals.

Online registration closed yesterday, but entries will still be accepted at the beach on Sunday between 7.30 and 8.45am.

The series will return for another five races in 2017, starting on January 8.
