Pushing, shoving makes for pretty Heavy experience
HI darlings, it’s me again, ready to give you your weekly roundup of who did what with who. Last Friday night I headed to New Brighton beach where Heavy K was hosting his eagerly awaited annual event called Experience with Heavy K.
Heavy K has a massive following in his hometown and people came out in huge numbers, so much so that it was really quite hard to get inside.
By about 9pm, many fans couldn’t take it any longer as the security guys at the gate were just too slow. People began pushing and shoving and some even got in without paying, having waited outside the gate all that time.
Heavy K’s theme was military . . . some military order would have been useful seeing those poor security staffers being bombarded at the gate by people trying to get in.
Skinnerbek headed to the VIP area for safety but even here felt somewhat unsafe, as there were only two bulbs lighting up the entire tent.
At some point people were told to get up from the couches since these were apparently reserved for artists. I really couldn’t picture Black Coffee or any other artist venturing anywhere near that dark area.
On top of that, lots of local DJs were complaining that they were booked to perform but then were never given the chance.
The performances started very late. The first one up on stage from the national acts was Nokwazi, who got to perform just after midnight. Shem, she was trying so hard to make the crowd move to her songs but didn’t get a good response from them.
Busiswa and her dancers rocked the stage, and men were drooling wanting to touch those sexy bodies.
In the dark VIP area I spotted the Bay’s now famous designer, Laduma Ngxokolo, who was up and down answering phone calls. Or could it be that he one of those who avoids fans in that way?
Skinner was a bit over crowds by then but nevertheless set off for the Boardwalk on Saturday for a quick trawl of the Christmas in the Home market. Christmas shopping is a nightmare and I always try to get in early.
That afternoon I headed to one of the VIP suites at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Some of the Kaizer Chiefs Glamour Boys looked mighty fine, but I am a loyal Port Elizabethan. I did not appreciate the fact that they allowed Chippa United to klap them so – Chiefs lost 3-1, nogal.
My, oh my, their coach, Steve Komphela, will not forget PE even if he tries. He got his share of abuse from loyal fans, including having water bottles thrown at him. Shem, poor guy.
