Now is the time to explore new fishing spots

- WAYNE RUDMAN

AT this time of year competition for angling spots becomes fierce, and intolerance can be an issue. It’s time to think about others.

Now is your chance to explore other areas and leave the popular fishing spots to the visitors. Areas with too much activity do not generally produce catches in any event.

With holiday time on your hands, why not put in the extra effort, Take a walk down the sand to areas many do not venture to because they are a bit out of the way. This can be rewarding even if you don’t catch anything. Exploring new places is an adventure on its own.

As a young boy, I walked with my father from Schoenmakerskop to the Maitlands River mouth. What a walk and experience that was.

Summertime is when protection against the sun is critical. Fluid intake is just as important. I am not talking about the brown bottled stuff either – that is best left for the debrief at the appropriate place.

Generally, night angling is the better option as the wind is usually absent, with tolerable temperatures and all-round peaceful surrounds.

The social angling outings organised by Brett Harris of the Trophy Tackle Den have become a weekly Wednesday night event growing in numbers. Visit the store and get their schedule or visit their Facebook page for gallery pictures. Today’s picture shows Cornay Wasserman with his personal best grunter caught

on Wednesday at Bluewater Bay. Organised trips such as these are safe and help is always on hand, especially when the big fish come out.

Photos and shared experiences build friendships and lasting memories. Next is a great initiative from Transnet for the people of PE and especially for our children and anglers alike.

It’s a worthy cause to get behind and support. The harbour’s north wall (facing the oyster beds) will be open to angling for tomorrow only. To qualify you must deliver a new toy valued between R50 and R100 to Trophy Tackle Den (Old Steff’s) in Newton Park. In return you get a ticket to access the event. Only ticket holders may angle.

Today’s westerly turns easterly with the turn of the low tide at about 6.21am tomorrow and prevails throughout the weekend. There are no gale warnings.

With the east wind the temperatures are down. Tidal activity due to the neap tide we had on Wednesday is such that not much productive angling is expected. However, it provides ideal conditions to fish the harbour wall safely.
