Fast Fairview rides promise good weekend action

- Punters’ Pal

THINGS are happening very fast at the Fairview race track these days.

The South African 1 000m record was broken for the second time this year when four-year-old filly Scandal won the Glendore Sprint last Friday.

Scandal won in 54.38sec with a determined Craig Zackey in the saddle.

The mare Blizzard Belle, with the help of a tailwind, won a Pinnacle Stakes on January 11 this year.

Her time was 54.55, bettering the then record of Mythical Flight (54.96) set in 2001 at Turffontein.

This was a brilliant performance by Scandal on the very fast Fairview track – the only filly in the race, but she beat big boys like former Gr1 winner Normanz and Villa Del Largo.

The record was achieved in almost windless conditions and Zackey said afterwards he thought Scandal would only be at her best with her next start.

Corne Spies trained the new record-holder and is doing well with the sprinters at his Fairview satellite yard where his brother Erik is in charge.

The Spies-trained mare Jo Malone won the Speedster Stakes in August in fine style.

The PE stables have produced some great sprinters recently, like Hear The Drums and Copper Parade, and with many fine sprinters still campaigning at Fairview, more records are set to be broken soon.

There is no feature race at Fairview today, but a very interesting meeting awaits punters.

It is an early start as there are nine races on the card.

The focus will be on the Cape Town combination of trainer Glen Kotzen and jockey Richard Fourie.

It should be worth following them on the day.

Kotzen is bringing five runners to the Port Elizabeth meeting.

Fourie will be riding four of them and will also have winning races with his rides for other trainers on the day.

The popular Fourie will have many supporters shouting him home. He will be back riding in Cape Town tomorrow when the Southern Cross Stakes will be the main race.

The Cape Town Summer Season is now in full flow, with the Cape Guineas being run next weekend.
