Thirst-busting Big Daddy tops pick of sundowners

- Brett Adkins

IT’S not exactly a sundowner in the traditional sense – more like a ton-downer.

That’s the famous Big Daddy one-litre mug of draught beer which – should your thirst demand it – can be found at Hooters in Walmer, which boasts plenty of other more conventional after-work or after-beach drinks this festive season.

Launched in the US more than 30 years ago, the international Hooters franchise must no doubt be a favourite of president-elect Donald Trump if – for no other reason – than it has a predilection for the colour orange.

But with its bright and bold decor, the diner-style pub and eatery has a well-earned reputation for big beers, sizzling food and, of course, the Hooters girls who serve it all up.

The Bay franchise on the cor- ner of Heugh Road and Third Avenue is a laid-back, summery and airy venue, perfect for sundowners on warm evenings with a wide range of thirst-bursting refreshments.

In addition to its draught station and those Big Daddy glasses, coolers, ciders, spirits, aperitifs, liqueurs, wines and – that season favourite, tequila – are on call.

There are also a range of burgers with tempting topping combinations – such as bacon, cheddar and crispy onion rings, or grilled mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese (my personal favourite) – and a long list of other signature meals and sides, among them, their highly-rated chicken wings and curly fries – best enjoyed with the cheese sauce dip – as well as seafood, ribs, steaks, salads and other tantalising offerings.
