Something for everyone in mountain bike event

-

RIDERS and spectators can expect some heated action in Addo at next year’s The Herald Continental Cycle Tour mountain bike event, with something for everyone.

The race village at the Addo Polo Club will see some great additions, including a farmers’ market selling fresh produce, as well as helicopter flips for spectators to get a bird’s eye view of the race.

Parents are encouraged to bring the little ones along as there will be a play area for children, including a jumping castle.

If you need a break from the rugrats, the aftercare staff will be happy to take care of them.

For cyclists arriving a day early, a number of camping options will be available at the Addo Polo Club.

Either bring your own tent or book one of the standard or luxury tents.

Rob Hayter, of the Addo Polo Club, said: “There will be food available for campers at the club, for those who book meals in advance. There are also numerous restaurants in the area for everyone to consider.”

And when it comes to enjoying the trails, there is a race to suit all ages and fitness levels.

If you do not feel up to the 60km Adventure and 80km Extreme events, the 30km Powerade Leisure Challenge might be more your speed.

For the future professionals, there are the 5km Powerade Kiddies’ Challenge and the 500m Powerade Toddlers’ Dash.

Race director Brad Jackson said: “The 5km route is flat and easy and includes a fun section through the SRCC citrus packing sheds, as do all the other routes.

“This option is ideal for kids or families just wanting to get a taste of mountain biking.

“The 30km route is fairly easy without any technical sections and a limited amount of climbing, ideally suited to novice mountain bikers,” Jackson said.

“The 60km route is a step up from the 30km, including a good dose of single track and a fair bit of climbing.

“The 80km route is a challenging one with plenty of technical single track and lots of climbing suited to experienced and fit mountain bikers.”

The routes will remain mostly the same as last year, Jackson said, with a few minor tweaks, including, as always, a few new sections of single track at Hayterdale Trails.

“There are plenty of water points along the route to keep riders hydrated and energised,” he said.
