Sheriff rides into town to keep rivals honest at Fairview

- Punters’ Pal

IT is always an occasion when the Sheriff is in town.

Gogetthesheriff is one of Port Elizabeth’s favourite horses and will have his regular supporters group urging him on today at the Fairview race course.

When the Sheriff is running, it means there is lots of quality on display – and this will be the case in today’s main event, the Memorial Mile.

Some fine sorts like Jet Explorer, True Master, Alghadeer and Shadow Ofhis Smile are among those that will be lining up for the R150 000 prize money.

Jet Explorer looks like the horse the Sheriff has to beat to win this one.

There are nine races on the card, and the Memorial Mile is not the only one that looks very interesting.

The meeting starts with a race for the babies. There will be 13 two-year old fillies racing over 800m in the first race. Let’s hope we see a future star in action.

In a Pinnacle Stakes, over 2 400m, the best long-distance horse in the Eastern Cape, Crown Of Gold, will be in action.

At his best, he will be a banker – but it is his second run after a layoff, and he does have to carry a hefty 62kg. He still looks tough to beat, but it is a big task for the eight year old.

It is a pity that Richard Fourie is not riding today. He was in red-hot form last week and it would have been lovely to see him on the back of horses like Jet Explorer and Nabisco, some of the runners he did well against previously.

Fourie’s fine riding made sure our Place Accumulator was on target yet again last week, although the small payout did not help much.

The satellite yard of Justin Snaith looks strong today – and a horse like Nabisco should be a popular banker to help punters along.

Tomorrow sees the running of the R1-million Grand Parade Cape Guineas at Kenilworth in Cape Town.

It is great to see the Eastern Cape will be represented by Pacific Spirit, trained by Yvette Bremner.
