NELSON Mandela Bay is known for its superb beaches and laid-back lifestyle. But for Instagram lovers, the city has a whole lot more to offer.

Instagram groups such as Colours of You SA and Instagrammers South Africa have provided what can be described as a guided tour of where to go to take stunning pictures with the windy city as your backdrop.

My HeraldLIVE has scaled down the number of options and lists your top five selfie spots, as well as an old favourite, in the Port Elizabeth area.

Shark Rock Pier

It is one of the city’s most iconic symbols and is instantly recognisable.

Murals around the city

There are several different murals around the city such as the funky graffiti art opposite Operative Hire, the wall with different faces on the side at ArtEC Gallery in Bird Street, Central, and several works along Norwich in Central. Look out for the latest addition – a mural of former public protector Thuli Madonsela in Maduna Road, KwaLanga, Uitenhage.

Donkin Mosaic

This one can be a tricky because it is all about how you are positioned, but this kaleidoscope of colours, overlooking the city, is not to be missed.

Athenaeum ‘Any Man’ statue

This is a sculpture of every man and any man by Mzolisi Daba, sitting on a bench just as you enter the Athenaeum. Its positioning on the bench, with a space to sit next to it, gives you the feeling that it was made for selfies.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

It was built for the 2010 World Cup and has become an integral part of the city landscape with many functions, concerts and matches hosted there.

St George’s Park Conservatory

It is an old favourite, but it is still a beautiful location and one of the city’s most loved photo-shoot locations.

SOME TIPS FOR TAKING SELFIES: Lighting

Lighting is everything and often natural light works best. A flashlight is a no-no as it can be hard on the skin, so if you can find a nicely lit spot, then go for it.

Angles

Never take a selfie from the bottom. You will look bigger than you are – unless that is what you are aiming for! Always take it from the top angled down, as you will look slimmer and younger.

Filter

Do not hashtag #nofilter when it is clear you have applied a filter. Also avoid using too many hashtags.

Too much face

People will get bored of seeing your face every time. So try and take selfies with interesting items in the background to keep your followers interested.

Here’s to more happy snapping!
