THE PE Sports Legends Trust (PESLT) honoured former EP men’s senior soccer side captain George Potgieter at the weekend.

Potgieter, along with the late Sydney Prince, were two of the members of the side who attended the reunion of players who made up the EP team of 1968, which won the Kajee Cup.

“The PE Sport Legends Trust was honoured and privileged to be able to have reunited this team,” trust official Jeff Frans said.

“The stories told were wonderful and reflected an era when these legends were outstanding and played such a big role in keeping the community’s spirits up during difficult years. A clock handed to George Potgieter by the trust symbolises his status as a legend,” Frans said.

Apartheid law divided race groups into Indian, coloured, black and white and ordered them to live, work and play separately.

Some games would slip through regulations and were played as international fixtures.

The Kajee Cup was a three-way tournament where coloured, black and Indian teams played each other for the coveted prize.

“The legendary captain George Yusuf Potgieter was reunited with his 1968 team for the first time in more than 40 years,” trust member Graeme Sauls said.

“This is a momentous occasion as we commemorate our very own local legends. Sadly, not everyone could attend but the majority of the team were in attendance.”

EP goalkeeper Godfrey de Kock said Potgieter had been an outstanding team member.

“We played together in many tournaments and he would give it his all, uplifting and motivating everyone,” De Kock said.
