Jedi Rollers return to PE for once-off reunion show
AFTER more than a decade in the Death Star of “doing other stuff”, legendary Port Elizabeth band Jedi Rollers return for a once-off reunion concert at Art on Target on Wednesday next week.
This much-loved band rocked the Eastern Cape early in the millennium with a unique blend of funk, alternative rock, hip-hop, programmed beats, reggae, spoken word and melodic hooks that built a cult following in their home base.
“Superintendent-Inspectors in the Serious Peaceful Crime Unit; we don’t just scheme it, we tune it!” went one of their popular lyrics. Now the Rollers are back to tune it one more time at Art on Target.
The band featured a revolving cast of members and collaborators, with core membership varying between five and nine men, women, singers, guitarists, producers, DJs, instrumentalists and MCs.
Jedi Rollers released three albums and an EP and had songs like Push Play, Everywhere and One Hundred Rand included on radio playlists, movie soundtracks and compilations.
The comeback show will include Kendall Beadon (guitar, programmes), Hagen Engler (voice), Nelis van Tonder (guitar), Darren Udemans (bass), Jason King (drums, programmes), Mao aka Thingimajigi and Buli G (voice).
“We’re going to relight a funky, friendly togetherness,” Engler said. “It’s going to be one big conception of one common goal, a myriad parts of one loving whole. Kaleidoscope aspects of one, Creole soul!”
The Jedi Return show will take place from 8pm on Wednesday.
The show will also feature new material and interesting collaborations. Entrance will be R70. As Art on Target does not sell alcohol , you may bring your own.
