Poor angling prospects over windy Christmas

- WAYNE RUDMAN

THIS weekend heavy winds are predicted, which will make their appearance just after noon today. It will blow throughout the weekend and the westerly will peak at sunrise tomorrow, slowly moderating and turning easterly at around sunrise, increasing in strength throughout the day for Sunday.

Low tide is at 6.26am tomorrow, with high tide just before 1pm. The angling prospects are poor for the weekend with neap tide conditions prevailing. The 21st was absolute neap tide and we progress towards a dark moon on the 28th of the month.

This past period a number of fish have been caught, with mostly non-edibles coming ashore. It is the time of year that the angling for non-eds can provide that adrenaline rush that many seek.

Considering the prevailing conditions, I suggest you concentrate inside the bay in the Brighton Beach area and give this style of angling a go. Pre-made baits can be purchased at tackle stores along with the tackle needed to “slide” these baits out. Since these are rather heavy baits, conventional casting can be a bit cumbersome, thus the technique of “sliding” has been created.

Considering the wind conditions expected for tomorrow, a little assistance from Mother Nature might be useful since you’ll be angling with the wind.

A word of caution: there has been a spike in shark activity of late so don’t be disappointed should your catch be reduced in size! It is not uncommon to have a raggy feed off your prized catch.

I have always been interested in products out there that make an angler’s life easier. I am tide-conscious and while browsing an auction website recently I came across a useful watch that was inexpensive and has helped me no end in planning my trips to the water.

This watch has a lunar and tidal phase facility that times the angling prospects better and makes the deciding when to close at hand – especially with the time constraints we have today.

I might add that a lunar day is 24 hours and 50 minutes, advancing the time at which our daily tides occur. This has always fascinated me, hence the acquisition of this watch.
