Popular sitcom might return

- Catherine Gee

ACCORDING to former guest star Leslie Jordan, the hit Nineties and Noughties sitcom Will & Grace has been ordered for a new series by studio NBC.

The comedy began in 1998 and starred Eric McCormack and Debra Messing as best friends Will, a gay lawyer, and Grace, a straight interior designer.

Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally starred as Jack, Will’s flamboyant best friend, and Karen, Grace’s lazy assistant with the squeaky voice.

Jordan, who won an Emmy for his supporting role in the show, said in a radio interview with KPBS that it was being revived for 10 episodes.

NBC has declined to comment but Mullally tweeted a picture of the four main cast members with the words “self-explan”, further fuelling the rumours.

It’s not the first time that she has discussed the possibility. In an interview last month, Mullally, who is promoting her new film Why Him? (which opened in South Africa last week), was asked if the sitcom would be coming back and her response suggested that it was likely.

“Well, OK. All I can say is that there is a very good chance that that might happen,” she said. “It’s not happening right this second. I mean, we’re not rehearsing or anything like that.

“But there is a very good chance that something is going to materialise ... can’t really talk about it or say anything, because you know how it is.”

It is rumoured that NBC has been considering reviving the show since the four cast members reunited for an election-themed viral video that urged the US public to vote. However, Messing has since tweeted that the revival is still in talks. Over the course of its eight-year run, Will & Grace won 16 Emmy Awards and has been credited with breaking down barriers for the LGBT community and helping to normalise homosexuality in popular culture.

It arrived at a time when a star coming out as gay could be met with their TV show having parental warnings slapped on it (as happened with Ellen DeGeneres’s sitcom in 1997).
