MATRIC RESULTS OUT
TO those who didn’t make it, it’s not the end of the world. There’s always a second time. Please don’t hurt yourself. Look to those who are graduates. If you can ask, you will find some did fail. You must always know that the trials and failures are but a test of time and mean to test your trust in God. He will meet you at your point of need and disappointments. Pupils should not despair or leave their studies. One day you will make it. Remember, you still have a bright future ahead – stay strong and be blessed. VUYANI MKOKO, UITENHAGE SO a meaningless few pages with just numbers for the matric results. Again the bar is lowered to protect the few weaklings and misfits. BALANCED SEEKING clarity from the Department of Basic Education on progressed pupils: does the choice of writing all Grade 12 subjects over a two-year period rest with the pupil or department? EXTENSION OF ESKOM SCAM OF OLD
SEEMS like the DA scam of “use less water and we’ll increase the price to make up the shortfall in revenue” is just an extension of the Eishkom scam of yesteryear. AV C, UITENHAGE
POOR TREATMENT AT UITENHAGE HOSPITAL
“MAGGOTS shock for PE hospital patient” (January 4): my father, 77, had burn wounds and my family was forced to do wound dressings by nurses at Provincial Hospital, Uitenhage. On refusing to change the bandages, the nurse said in English, “This old man’s wounds are so septic, he’s obviously going to die, there’s no point of dressing him”, not knowing that the “old man” was a Royal Reader who understood the language and gave her his bit. He later received the best care at Dora Nginza Hospital and fully recovered. LINDELWA, UITENHAGE
WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, JZ PLAYS RACE CARD
PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma says white business is plotting to unseat him. When all else fails, play the race card. Bat on. I am past this Luddite thinking. IAN

BOTTLES COLLECTED
WISH the DA would stop patting itself on the back! If there was “zero” tolerance (“Zero tolerance pays off as 300 000 flock to beaches in metro”, January 3), ask my friend at Schoenies how many bags of bottles they collected. RESIDENT
CRAVEN DIED IN 1993
I REFER to the Today in History segment for January 4. It that Danie Craven died on January 4 1992. “Doc” in fact passed away on January 4 1993. WARREN MYBURGH
SOUTH African History Online, the website from which The Herald sources its Today in History column, lists Danie Craven’s death year as 1992. However, in checking other sources, it appears the year should be 1993. Our apologies. – The editor
ANC WELCOMED NATS
D R Galloway, you refer to the “National Party dinosaur party now called the DA” (“SA will rue day it voted DA into power”, January 5). Please bear in mind that the DA has evolved from the liberal, anti-apartheid PFP of Helen Suzman, Frederick van Zyl Slabbert and others, while it was your ANC which welcomed Marthinus van Schalkwyk’s Nats into its arms. Dubious ancestry indeed. Methinks it's time for you to get over it. NORMAN
